Somer Valley House Care Home Supports Age UK’s ‘Memory Box’ Programme to Enhance Dementia Support in the Community

3 April 2025 Somer Valley House

Somer Valley House is proud to announce its partnership with Age UK to host the Memory Box Programme, a weekly Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) session designed to support individuals experiencing memory issues or early to moderate dementia.

As part of its ongoing commitment to dementia care and community engagement, Somer Valley House will provide a dedicated space for these structured therapy sessions, helping to enhance cognitive function, promote social interaction, and improve overall wellbeing for those living with dementia.

The Memory Box sessions offer a two-hour brain workout, incorporating a variety of engaging activities, discussions, and exercises. Each week, a different theme is explored, such as Diversity, Our Beautiful World, Emotions, and Life Stories, encouraging members to share thoughts and experiences through small group discussions. Sensory activities including taste, touch, and sound are also incorporated to enhance engagement.

Additionally, sessions include chair-based exercises to support mobility, and a refreshment break, giving participants a chance to form meaningful connections with others in a welcoming and social environment. The goal is to create an atmosphere that stimulates the mind while ensuring enjoyment and fun remain at the heart of every session.

Through this partnership, Somer Valley House is reinforcing its dedication to supporting those affected by dementia, not only within its care home but in the wider community.

Carol Britton, General Manager at Somer Valley House, said:

“We are delighted to be supporting the Memory Box programme in partnership with Age UK. Dementia can be incredibly isolating, not just for those living with it, but for their families too. By opening our doors to host these sessions, we are providing a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment where individuals can connect, exercise their minds, and find support. At Somer Valley House, we are committed to making a difference in our local community, and this initiative is a fantastic way to help those who need it most.”

While Memory Box sessions are not open to walk-ins, individuals who are interested in taking part can apply to join the programme. Application forms can be obtained directly from Somer Valley House or by contacting Age UK’s head office.
