Furze Field Manor, part of Oyster Care Homes, is launching a Memory Box initiative to support residents in reminiscing about their past, strengthening connections with caregivers, and enhancing overall wellbeing.
The idea was inspired by resident Gordon’s family, who thoughtfully created a Memory Box filled with personal items to help their father reconnect with treasured moments from his life. Seeing the profound impact this had on Gordon – both in bringing him comfort and sparking meaningful conversations – the team at Furze Field Manor was so moved that they are now working to introduce Memory Boxes for other residents who would benefit from them.
Each Memory Box is carefully curated by family members and can include a variety of cherished items, such as old photographs, books, sentimental mementos, and familiar scents. These tangible reminders serve as prompts to help residents recall significant life moments, encourage conversation, and provide a strong sense of identity and belonging.
Gordon’s daughter, Anthea, who played a key role in assembling her father’s Memory Box, shared:
“When we put Dad’s memory box together, we chose things we thought would bring back memories and help staff connect with him. We included photos of his late wife, places he visited as a young man, and items from a club he was part of. Even things he might not fully remember – like a wooden puzzle carved for him – offer comfort and familiarity. The staff told us it really helped them engage with Dad, and we’re so pleased it’s now inspiring something special for other residents.”
The Memory Box initiative is now in full motion, with the care team collaborating with other residents and families to create personalised boxes tailored to each individual. These boxes will also serve as an icebreaker for new residents, helping them settle in while giving team members valuable insights into their backgrounds, interests, and life experiences.
Sara Heath, Care Manager at Furze Field Manor, said:
“At Oyster Care Homes, we are dedicated to providing truly person-centred care – care that goes beyond physical health to nurture emotional, social, and intellectual wellbeing. When we saw the impact of Gordon’s Memory Box, we knew this was something special. It was a privilege to witness the joy it brought him, and we’re incredibly excited to now offer this to more residents. A simple collection of meaningful items can spark the most wonderful conversations and provide deep comfort, making every day that little bit more special.”
Furze Field Manor is now inviting families of residents to take part in this initiative, working alongside the team to create Memory Boxes that reflect the unique lives and experiences of their loved ones.
