Copperfield Court Care Home Resident Takes on Role of Shopkeeper in Heartwarming New Initiative

18 February 2025 Copperfield Court

Copperfield Court has introduced a new initiative that empowers residents to take on meaningful roles within the home. 77-year-old resident Rosemary Carpe, fondly known as Rosey, has been appointed as the shopkeeper for the on-site store, a role that allows her to remain active, engaged, and continue her lifelong passion for supporting others.

Rosey, a former nurse specialising in learning disabilities, first stayed at Copperfield Court for respite care in August 2024. Following a cancer diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy treatment, she made the decision to return to the home in October 2024. Eager to maintain a sense of purpose, she has fully embraced her new position, ensuring the shop is well-stocked, neatly organised, and a welcoming space for residents.

Rosey has already taken her responsibilities to heart, accompanying a team member on a shopping trip to carefully select supplies. She took great pride in arranging the shop’s displays, enhancing its overall appearance, and has been enthusiastically spreading the word among fellow residents, excited to serve her community.

Speaking about her new role, Rosey said:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute while here. It brings me joy to stay active and continue to support others, something I’ve cherished throughout my life. I look forward to every day!”

Eve Balcombe, Registered General Manager at Copperfield Court, said:

“At Copperfield Court, we strongly believe in fostering independence and encouraging residents to take on meaningful roles that enhance their sense of purpose. Rosey’s enthusiasm for this position is truly inspiring, and it is wonderful to see how much joy it brings her. The shop is more than just a convenience – it is a social hub within the home, and Rosey is the perfect person to lead it.”

The initiative forms part of Copperfield Court’s wider commitment to promoting independence and engagement among residents, ensuring they feel valued, involved, and able to contribute to the community in a way that is meaningful to them.
