Rownhams Manor care home, part of Oyster Care Homes, helped make 100-year-old resident Brendon Cooke’s dream come true when he was welcomed aboard the Parsifal ship for a memorable day at sea.
A lifelong sailor, Brendon began his maritime career as a cadet at 17 and spent over 40 years at sea — including 20 years as a captain with the P&O Steamship Company.
Warmly received by the Parsifal’s crew and captain, Brendon was given a VIP tour of the ship.
“The technology is remarkable,” Brendon remarked as he marvelled at how much ships have advanced. “Back in my day, it was all manual work and much smaller! I don’t think I’ll take her out tonight…”
After his tour, Brendon enjoyed coffee in the dining area with the captain while sharing stories of life on the ocean and his time travelling the world – his favourite destination being Australia, where he and his wife got married.
Upon their departure, Brendon shared some advice with the captain; ‘I hope you get to my age – the secret is gin.’
Samantha Squibb, the General Manager at Rownhams Manor, joined Brendon on the trip. Samantha said, ‘We’re always looking to create meaningful, personalised experiences for each resident.’
